Following the local Tesco Bags of Help vote, our Community Garden project came first and has been chosen by Tesco Customers to receive a grant! Many thanks to all who voted. A ‘Big’ thanks to Tesco. The project has begun with clearing the site, ready for the pathways and raised beds.
We were delighted to accept a generous cheque from Tesco #bagsofhelp. A mighty £5000 has been won by Atherington Children’s Playing Field. The money will support the Community Garden Project. A huge ‘Thank you’ to all those who voted for our project. Thanks to Jenny Boyce and Jill Thorne for organising the bid. A special thanks to Tesco #bagsofhelp for their ongoing groundwork scheme supporting so many worthwhile causes and projects in our local area. Friday 3rd February. Fine Chisel performed ‘Beneath the Blizzard’. The fast paced story telling and live music at the Pavilion was well received. All ages enjoyed, the children particularly delighted in the performance. The Playing Field Committee continue to work in partnership with Beaford Arts providing entertainment for our community.
On Saturday 27th April Pentabus performed “As The Crow Flies”. Based on a true story of a woman who struck up an unlikely friendship with a wounded crow, the play featured live music, original songs, witty drama – and a crow called Alfie. A heart-warming story of friendship, healing and kindness from Hattie Naylor, Olivier Award nominee and adapter of Radio 4’s The Diary of Samuel Pepys.
Two actors performed Beth and Alfie’s unusual story, accompanied by live music composed especially for this play by Dom Coyote. A funny, moving and timeless story of our endless fascination with birds – especially clever, tricksy, knowing birds like Alfie.
Atherington Fete 2017
Oh what a perfect day… Beautiful weather, metres of bunting, cute alpaca’s, smiley volunteers and pots of clotted cream!! Many thanks to Higher Beings- stilt walkers, Torrington Silver Band, Volunteers and Stall holders. With a very long list of volunteers and those happy to sponsor the event, its too many people to name but we thank you all. Volunteers worked during the week and over the weekend to ensure an afternoon of fun took place. Many were egg-cited as the suspense mounted for this years egg throwing competition. Congratulations to David and Mike the winners of this years Egg throwing Competition! Egg-cellent fun.
Congratulations to Martin with Joe his four legged friend who won Overall Champion in this years Dog show. Thanks to Andrew for judging and sponsorship from NWF, J. Pickards & Co, So Country, Webbers Estate Agents, Claire Large Rosettes and Daisy Park making the event possible.
July and August 2017
The three open mornings held at The Pavilion Atherington over the Summer Holidays proved popular. The volunteers planned a range of fun and interactive play that varied each week. The aim is not to make profit but to welcome the community and allow the space to be used in all weathers as a meeting point for adults and a playtime for the children.
We took part in the ‘get devon buzzing’ competition building our own bug hotel, encouraging the children to care for the insects in the environment around them. The hotel is a manmade structure created to provide shelter for insects. It has several different layers that provide insects with nesting facilities – particularly during winter, offering shelter or refuge for many types of insects. The bug hotel is sited on the Community garden area of the field, follow the newly laid stepping stones and you will pass the ‘hotel’!
Thanks to NWF for kindly donating a few pallets allowing us to build the hotel.
Music on a Summers Evening 13th August 2017
With 8 piece party band Majestic Blue Families, neighbours and friends gathered enjoying the event. The Playing Field was a great venue for the dancing and musical entertainment within the beautiful North Devon countryside. Thank you Majestic Blue for a fantastic gig.
Friday 13th October Brubeck at Beaford – Neil Maya Quartet
The Pavilion enjoyed a magical evening when Neil and his group visited – an amazing quartet! The audience chatted with them before and after the event; they seemed to be selling quite a few CD’s which was great. One elderly lady who has moved down from London said it was just like being back at Ronnie Scott’s jazz club. Another in the audience who had seen Dave Brubeck live way back confirmed that Neil and Co are spot on. All the musicians are very talented and for £7.50 the audience of over 40 people enjoyed nearly 2 hours of first class music. The programme included all the Dave Brubeck standards but Neil did include some lesser known numbers and also one or two of his own compositions. Each number was introduced with a brief overview about its origin, time signature, composer and Brubeck line up at the time of recording.
The quartet really liked our small venue and atmosphere (we had soft lighting). Except for the electric piano and introductions, they played unamplified with a sound level correct for the size of venue.
Those people who bought supper remarked how nice it was; may thanks to Jo for organising the catering.
Tuesday 24th October Coffee Morning & Pumpkin Carving
The Coffee Morning and Halloween Pumpkin Carve held at the Pavilion on Tuesday 24th October was a good success. The room was full of productive families and friends concentrating on the task of carving the pumpkins. 23 were carved in total. The creativity was celebrated at the end of the event when the curtains are drawn and pumpkins lit revealing a halo of golden light and spooky shadows.
A raffle, cake stall, variety of children’s fundraising games and refreshments kept all busy and entertained. The spooky tunnel on the outside of the Pavilion was available for the children to explore. Congratulations to Tony Kneil for guessing the Weight of the home grown pumpkin, to Mrs Milton for naming the skeleton ‘Bones’.
The proceeds for the event, £177, was donated to the Amber and Daisy fund (click for details ). Many thanks to all who donated goods, money, cakes, raffle prizes. Thanks again.
